Local Business Marketing to Dominate Google

Local business owners pull out their hair

Today I want to show you what every local business should be doing to market their business online and dominate the first page of Google. But I’ll also show you the top 2 mistakes that local businesses are making with their online marketing today.

Let’s jump into this with the top two mistakes that many local business owners are making with their online marketing today.

Mistake #1: They don’t think online marketing is important!

You’re probably like me and anytime you need to find a business in my area whether it is a coffee shop, a restaurant, a tile store, a plumber or some kind of contractor you do a quick search on Google to see all of the local businesses in your area. Most people do the same. If your local business is not on Google, then you’re missing out on a lot of free business and you’re probably giving it to your competition.

Often times, local businesses spend so much time and money trying to make their websites rank number one for their desired keywords. That’s great if you can do it but it’s not completely necessary. You may be thinking, “You just said online marketing is so important…” Yes, it is so important, but you don’t need to keep going until you’re number one on Google. As long as you are above five and in the Google My Business listings then you’re doing just fine and I’m about to show you exactly what I mean.

A lot of people don’t realize is that there are other ways of getting on the first page of Google besides ranking their website.

Here are the top 5 ways of ranking your Local Business on the first page of Google.

Method #1: Get ranked in Google.

It’s called website SEO. For example, let’s say you own a plumbing business in San Antonio. Every time someone types in Plumber in San Antonio or Plumber in San Antonio, you’re always going to want your website to come up on Google, right? You can get your website ranked and once you have your website ranked, people can see your contact information and see what your business is all about.

The mistake that we mentioned before is that local business owners keep going and going and going until they are number 1 in Google – and might never reach there. You don’t have to be number one in Google. As long as your local business is within the top five or above in the Google listings, you’re doing just fine. That is why we are going to go onto method number two.

Method #2: Google My Business listing.

You might ask “What is that?” When you do a search normally, you’ll see that Google My Business (this used to be Google Places) has a whole list of businesses in your area. You want your local business to appear in those listings. To set up your account, go to Google My Business and list your business. If you have a website and a Google Places listing, you can potentially take up two spots in Google anytime someone does a search in your area. The only problem with Google My Business is that you need a real address, so if you own an online business or something else, you need to find a real address that you can put down. Without a physical address Google will not accept your listing. So as long as you have an address, you can always fill out a Google Listing spot.

Method #3: Video SEO

This is the process of getting your video made, advertising your business and services and getting it ranked in Google for certain key words. If you owned a coffee shop or restaurant and you get a video made advertising your restaurant or coffee shop then you can get it ranked in Google for certain keywords like San Antonio Coffee Shop or Coffee Shop San Antonio. If you have your website, your Google My Business page and your video ranked, you are now taking up three spots on the first page of Google.

Method #4: Directory Sites

This is the trickiest method that most people don’t even realize they can do. Go to Google and do a search for businesses in your area. If you own a running store type in running store in San Antonio and notice what listings appear. Go through the listings and if you see a Yellow Page, Yelp or another directory site listed create a profile on those sites. Go to one of those directories and work at ranking on their site. This way whenever someone does a search for “running store,” they will see your website, your Google My Business page, your video and your Yellow Pages or Yelp. They will see you at the top there also.

That is four different ways that you can dominate the first page of Google.

Method #5: Google AdWords

You can actually pay Google to put your website on the first page for your desired keyword. If you’re trying to get ranked or seen for plumbing service in San Antonio or running shop in Boulder, you can actually buy an ad and place it on Google for anytime someone searches those keywords. Granted, this is a paid service but you only pay when someone clicks on the ad. That means you only pay when someone actually clicks on the link to your website or landing page – not for actually seeing the ad itself. According to Gary Vaynerchuk this is a must-do strategy for driving customers to your business.

These are five different ways that you can get on the first page of Google and really dominate the search results. They are each very effective and I encourage local businesses to do this.

Let’s drive this home with a final example. If you’re looking for a tile contractor or a lawyer or a certain retail store in my area you’ll go to Google and type in Tile Contractor in San Antonio. You see the result number one is Bob’s Tile Contractor. But, right below it you notice Joe’s Tile Contractor. You also see that Joe’s Tile Contractor has a video on the first page of Google and a Google My Business page on the first page. You also notice they have an AdWords campaign going. They also have Yellow Pages listing below. You click on that and see Joe’s Tile Contractor’ at the top. With all of those first page positions I bet you’re going to call Joe’s Tile Contractor! You’re probably not going to go call Bob!

Bob has the number one spot in Google! When I see five different results on Google for Joe’s Tile Contractor, I’m going to assume he’s the better contractor and really knows what he’s doing. This is the same for any business. It doesn’t matter if you are a tile contractor or you own a coffee shop or a running store, or you’re a lawyer or you own a restaurant. Any local business will always see a benefit of having five spots on Google.

Hopefully, you found these tips useful and I would love to hear any success stories that you experience from them.
