It’s understood that keyword research is one of the most vital parts of any SEO project. Keywords determine your content, your competitors, even your customers. But how can you discover high volume, profitable keywords that your competition does not know about without spending weeks researching or spending a lot of money on keyword research software?
In this post, I’m going to share five of my all-time favorite keyword research strategies for discovering underground search phrase opportunities. Your competition probably doesn’t even know about these!
Studies have shown that many people do their keyword research the entirely wrong way.. What am I speaking about? Well, typically when people start their keyword research, they pull up the good ‘ole Google keyword planner. But, believe it or not, the Google keyword planner is just about the last place you want to search for awesome keyword ideas. The reason I say that is because there are two massive problems with the Google keyword planner. The first one is that it tends to deliver very close variations of the key words that you put into it. So, for instance, if you place the keyword ‘weight loss’ into the planner, it spits out really close variation like ‘fat burning ideas’ as well as ‘weight reduction methods’. It does not offer you intelligent related key words like ‘nutrition’ or ‘workout’ for example. The other trouble is that it tends to offer the very same precise keywords to everyone, including your competitors.
So in order to discover profitable keyword phrases that your competitors don’t know about, you need to step beyond the Google keyword planner and use one of the following five techniques.
Let’s begin with one of my all-time favored keyword research honey holes, forums. It’s called “searches related to”. “Searches related to” is generally Google’s way of revealing you thematically-related keywords to the keyword that you searched. Believe it or not, Amazon is one of my all-time favorite keyword phrase research sites. You’re most likely asking yourself just how do you use Amazon.com for keyword research. The four approaches that I have shared are great, but I’m sure you’ll agree that I have actually saved the best for last.
Last up, we have the holy grail of keyword research, Quora.com. Now if you’re not acquainted with it, Quora.com is essentially like Yahoo Answer except that the answers are actually useful. Another feature it has that’s helpful is that when you look for a keyword phrase in Quora, it shows you the most popular questions. Which basically points out what people are interested in; simply put, key phrases that people look for in Google.
Simply head over to Quora.com and type a keyword related to your particular niche. You’ll find several questions and answers. You actually want to read the questions and notice keywords that turn up over and over. Put those into the Google keyword planner. You can also read the threads themselves to see if there are any followup questions; these are potentially really fantastic keyword ideas.
There you have it, five little known ways to do your keyword research. I can almost guarantee your competitors have never thought of these – unless they read this article.
