WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace – which is best
WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace… With so many platforms wade through, how can you know which ones are best for SEO? Which one should you use? WordPress is free, WIX costs money, Squarespace is also out there. There are so many choices. How do you know which one is the best to use when they’re all popular?
Today we’re going to discuss WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace. Which one is the best for SEO?
Before we dive into all of the platforms, let’s go over some basic stats from builtwith.com. Currently, WordPress powers more than 50% of the web — literally more than half of the internet. WIX, according to builtwith.com, comes in second with roughly 7% of all Web sites. Squarespace came in third with over 4% of the Web sites.
Now, Atrust, an SEO tool, ran an interesting study comparing WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace. And they were trying to break down which ones drive more traffic? Here is some of what they discovered. They found out that 46.1% of WordPress domains get organic traffic against 1.4% of WIX’s domain names. Similarly, Squarespace had roughly 15.1% of search traffic.
Now you’re probably thinking, “WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace… Don’t these stats pretty much answer the question?” No, and even ATrust wasn’t trying to say one is better than the other. The data is actually pretty much inconclusive. The reason is that someone who uses WordPress could know SEO much better, which could be much more technical.
In comparison, someone who’s using WIX may not really know SEO as well. So you can’t just compare them, right? It wouldn’t be an apples-to-apples comparison.
Let’s go over each platform.
WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace
When talking about WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace, WordPress is the most popular platform. It’s perfect if you’re SEO savvy because there’s just so much flexibility and customization that you can do that you can’t do with the other platforms. The great part about WordPress is it’s simple. You just need to add in plugins. Regardless of what you want, there’s probably a plugin that solves a problem for you.
WordPress Pros: it has a comprehensive list of advanced plugins, from the Yoast SEO plug into the All-In-One SEO Pack to broken link checker. It pretty much has plugins that any search engine optimizer would need. Support is easy to find because there are so many people who use WordPress. There are support forums. There are videos online. You can find countless answers, even on YouTube.
WordPress also offers templates so you can have a Web site that is already optimized for mobile speed as opposed to one that isn’t optimized for mobile speed.
WordPress Cons: If you download too many plugins, it could affect your site’s speed, but two, if they’re not compatible, your website can break. You don’t necessarily need any technical skillset. Still, it isn’t as simple as dragging and dropping like some of the other platforms. So, if you want a customized experience, you need to know some code or hire someone to help you out.
WIX is next in our conversation about WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace. If your priority isn’t SEO and you just want a simple and easy-to-use CMS, then WIX is a great solution.
Pros of WIX: WIX includes an SEO Wizard that will optimize your site automatically. That makes getting started really easy if you have a new website. It also includes Accelerated Mobile Pages. AMP is Google’s framework that helps web pages, specifically mobile ones, load faster.
Cons of WIX: The first significant con is there’s not a lot of customization of metadata, titles, or URLs. Another big one is it often takes your site a bit longer to get indexed. The reason is that some of the WIX-based sites use a lot of AJAX. This causes some slowdowns. Also, with architecture, it’s more traditional. You can’t do a ton of unique and creative things with architecture to really improve your SEO. If you’re looking for a more modern architecture that’s very flexible, WIX is probably not a good fit.
The third platform in our discussion about WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace is Squarespace. It’s suitable for small, simple sites that don’t require anyone to know much about SEO.
Squarespace Pros: The site offers stunning designs. It also has some great site architecture built-in. It also allows for custom title tags and metadata, which is excellent. Squarespace supports functions like XML site maps. However, you can’t really edit them. So this is both a pro and a con.
Squarespace Cons: Indexing Squarespace pages can sometimes be challenging. I’ve seen users complain that it can take weeks, and even months, for pages to get indexed. Sometimes this is because of the platform. This could also be that the end-user isn’t that savvy when it comes to your submitting their site to Google. They also use their own naming conventions for SEO fields like meta descriptions is labeled as SEO description. This can also cause some confusion. You can’t really do anything about that. It’s also challenging to include alt-text with images. So if you’re hoping for a lot of linking from Google image search, you’re not going to have a ton coming from Squarespace.
WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace Conclusion
So the bottom line in talking about WIX versus WordPress versus Squarespace is that all the platforms have pros and cons. I prefer WordPress because it is the most customizable, and if you want someone to help you out, we can take care of you. If you desire more done-for-you services, Squarespace and WIX are more manageable, but they don’t have as much customization.
